[10 January 2004] "How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child." -- William Shakespeare, KING LEAR 1.4.295-96.

Hey, it's a catchy screen-name, n'est-ce-pas? But don't jump to the conclusion that Lear's harsh words match my sentiments.

I have two charming children with my wonderful wife of 20 years plus. Let me be bold enough to count my decade's worth of teaching senior-level high school English as an extended network of surrogate children. My experience puts the lie to Lear's words. There are the bad moments, on the home front and in the classroom, but all things considered it is a wonderful world.

Although KING LEAR is to my mind the most awesome thing in all of Western literature, its title character is (to quote the late Laurence Olivier, who played the role many times) "a tiresome old fart." Not my idea of a role model at all. The play's fascination for me lies not so much in the character of Lear as in that of the two "outcast" children, Cordelia and Edgar.

[29 April 2004] Toronto is one of the world's great book cities; the epicentre of the Toronto book world is surely our beloved Metro Reference Library (east side of Yonge just north of Bloor). In an attempt to get more of my releases "caught" and registered by fellow booklovers, I'm planning to do drop-offs over the next few weeks in various nooks-and-crannies within Metro Ref. So if you are looking for specific locations there, "go hunting" as follows:

LOCATION A: If you are at the top the second-floor staircase and are about to walk down, look into the recessed ledge at right-hand corner of the staircase. The book is there.

LOCATION B: In the alcove by the second-floor washrooms, there is a table with three cubbyholes underneath. The book is in the middle cubbyhole.

LOCATION C: On the third floor, there is a gold-coloured sofa directly under the stairwell. If you sit there, facing the underside of the stairwell, check between the pillow-crack. The book is there.

LOCATION D: On the third level within the Business Information Centre recessed-floor, there are some chairs by the big window that faces onto Yonge St. Three floor-level radiators are along the base of the window. The book is behind the middle radiator and the window.
