Why do I like BookCrossing?

  •  "Books are our friends." I've always remembered that line from a Star Trek (the original series) episode. Kirk was being tried by some miltary tribunal and had a rather unorthodox lawyer -- he still used real books and had a lot of respect for them. Honestly, I think that one episode changed my whole attitude toward books.
  •  There's something cool, almost clandestine, about leaving an item for someone you don't even know. You have no idea how it's going to pan out. Can you make a clean getaway without someone noticing and calling you back for the book you forgot? This appeals to the "Spy vs. Spy" in me as a result of years of reading MAD Magazine. It's really kind of a game.
  •  The finder may just end up throwing the book away (which is something I didn't have the heart to do). On the other hand, something wonderful may happen and you might bring the joy of reading that book into someone else's life. This appeals to my sense of altruism and legacy building.
