I have always loved books (probably why I'm at BookCrossing!). Books were to be read, re-read, and respected as I grew up. My mother actively encouraged my habit; both by buying and taking me to the library; also by encouraging my friendships with adults who lent me books. Nothing was out of bounds; I guess she figured anything I didn't understand I'd ask about or let go over my head. I can remember how horrified she was at herself for destroying a paperback copy of "The Exorcist" - she might have thought the content vile, but still, it was a BOOK. She couldn't have felt worse if she'd killed a small animal on purpose.
I inherited my mother's reverence for books; I even went and learned book repair so I could fix the damaged ones, especially old books. I'm better than I used to be - used to, I would buy books just because they needed repair and then I would surround myself with them. Books I actually read I almost never loaned out, so that added to my colllection, too. Shrinking bookshelf space slowed that trend, and discovering BookCrossing has allowed me to free some space!
