Come to the BC in DC 2011 Convention!

BCinDC Convention 2011 Logo

I used to have a hard time getting PMs but things seem to have gotten better. If you send a PM and I don't answer try sending an email ... or just start there if you prefer. My email address is my screen name and my service provider is Yahoo (dot) com.

I promise not to use your email address to send annoying forwards of jokes, warning stories (that are probably false anyways), or any emails that don't directly relate to our individual BookCrossing relationship. Please extend me the same courtesy and do not add me to any mass mailing that you may send out in the future.

ATTENTION PLEASE!

I have moved to Oklahoma and if you do not have an address with the zip code of 74873 then you do not have the correct address!!!

My friends list consists of people that I have met face-to-face in real life. If you have met me and I didn't get you on my friends list please let me know so that I can add you in!

My Bookshelf Stats and what they mean to me.

Books Registered: Well that one is pretty self explained as books I have been first to stick a BookCrossing label into. I try to come by books cheap or free and I register them and release them. BookCrossing is a hobby and a passion.

Released In The Wild: Many of my wild releases for 2003-2006 were at the Air Base libraries. The free book exchange shelves were mostly the only “safe” place to release books when the commander is fanatical about cleaning up anything that might be considered litter. A bus stop bench would be most risky. Now that I have moved back to the states I am releasing at a variety of locations and I enjoy book festivals and large gatherings for wild releasing lots of books.

Releases Caught and Books Found: These are numbers that reflect the fact that I do trade. I don’t get too excited about the stats overall and I have no idea which of these are the result of wild releases or wild catches.

Tell-A-Friend and New Members: The Tell-A-Friend number is a nice number because I have added BookCrossing as a line in my email signature. I have sparked some new members but unfortunately not many of them are active.

Forum Posts: Well what can I say? I like to talk. Many of my forum posts are helpful (I hope) to Newbies and indicate my participation in various forums. If you are interested read them for yourself. :)

My Wish List

I want to say thank you to Cliff for all the wonderful time that I spent using his wishlist feature before it was moved to this site. I have entered some of my wishes on my wishlist but I really don't need any books so I don't know how many more I'll be adding.

Award Winning Books

I have a lifetime goal of reading as many award winning books as I can. I have started with children's award winning books because of many fond memories that I have reading so many of these books.

I am looking for books that were winners or honor books of the following awards:

Newbery Medal
Sequoyah Book Award (Selected by Oklahoma Children)
Batchelder Award

I am also looking to read/re-read any of the books that appear on the Sequoyah Book Award Master list (the list that the winners are selected from each year) for either Children or Young Adults.

The following awards are presented to authors that have made outstanding contributions. I would love to read all of the books by the authors that have won these awards:

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal
The Margaret A. Edwards Award

I have a list of 1500+ books that fit one of these categories so don't expect to see a complete listing on my wish list anytime soon. If you know that you have one of these books that you would like to trade please ask and I will gladly trade. Searching my bookshelf will tell you if I have had the book in my possession.

My trading policies are as follows:

I expect that a book will be journaled when it is received as part of a controlled release (trade, RABCK, bookring, bookray, etc.) and I will mark it as received in my offline records when I get the emailed journal alert. I will not do repeat transactions with people that do not do journal entries. The journal entry does not need to be elaborate and even a simple "I got it!" journal entry will help to track the book from place to place as is the purpose of registering it in the first place.

Please read the book at your leisure and then have fun with it. I like books that travel but I can be patient for years as long as I know that it is safe in a good home. I do love to get journal alerts that say if you liked the book or not and why or why not so please feel free to make journal entries on the book anytime. Journal Entry Alerts are always exciting to get even if you don't think that your writing skills or great or you don't think that you have anything interesting to say. Please remember that edits are not sent to previous journalers so please make new journal entries for updates.

1) You may send a nice PM to me at any time to request a book that I have listed on my shelf. It helps if the book is listed as available but I will consider all requests. The PC books are generally not for trade because I use that category for books that I am not yet ready to part with ... but if you don't mind waiting then there might be some hope.

2) Please take just a bit of time to read the journal entries for the book. This will save both of us a lot of time. Please make sure that I am still in possession of the book before asking for it. The journal entry will almost always give an indication if I have read the book or not. If I have not read the book then I reserve the right to read it before I mail it. Keep this in mind if you are not feeling patient in waiting to get a requested book.

3) It does not always have to be a trade but I would appreciate the fact that you at least offer to trade or pay shipping. I reserve the right to offer the book to you as a RABCK if I am not in need of books at that time or if I am just feeling generous or whatever. I also do not define fair trades as always meaning 1 book = 1 book. The important thing in a trade is that both parties end up happy in the end. Make an offer! I might be inclined to trade a book for a postcard or some other form of trade. The worst case scenario is that we can't work something out that is agreeable to both of us and we simply would not trade in that situation.

4) Please note that my books are "BookCrossing" books. They are well labeled. Not all of them are in the best condition. However, they all will be readable. If you are looking to collect books or something like that then you will be sadly disappointed that these books are meant to be free and will not look good sitting on your shelf. I tend to label with BookCrossing labels, handwritten notes on the pages, permanent marker on the page edges, stickers and stamps.

5) Because of "postal budgeting" I may not always be able to mail out right away. I will try to be as honest as possible upfront about when I will be able to mail. However, sometimes life gets in the way and I will endeavor to at least keep you informed. The most convenient places for me to mail or to the United States, Canada, and Europe but I will consider mailing to other places if I like the terms of the trade or transaction.

6) Honor the trade. If we agree to trade then please do your part of the bargain. If you are not willing to honor the deal then just don't ask me.

If you are still interested after reading all of that then feel free to PM.

Status Codes
(and how I use them on my bookshelf)

When looking through my bookshelf you may want to take the following into consideration about how I use the status codes...

Available: This is a book that I am ready and willing to part with. This doesn’t mean that it is free for the taking for anyone that asks for it or demands it. (Please see my trading policies above.) This just means that this is a book that has no other plans.

To Be Read: I will use this status code for books that I will want to read before releasing. If I really like the book I might put it in my PC when I am done with it but most likely it will be set free.

Permanent Collection: I prefer the term Personal Collection. I do not believe that I will be in possession of these books for forever but for the time being I am keeping them. These could be my favorites that I have read a couple times and that I reserve the right to read over and over again. I may let people "borrow" the books but I would have to have a good trusting relationship with them first because these books are generally my most loved favorites or books that have a specific purpose that does not involve releasing at this time. Perhaps I will part with this book in the near future, the distant future, or not until the estate sale but I have registered it so that when it is released it will be trackable.

Most all of the educational books that I am keeping for future homeschooling are listed in the PC category because I know that I won't be them for a few years in most cases.

Reserved: These are books that I am saving for a purpose. You can usually tell the purpose from the journal entry. I keep track of my trades and other books that I have plans for with this feature.

Traveling: Well this is a bit self explanatory .... I list any book that is not in my possession as traveling.

Girl Scout Books and Boy Scout Books

I am always looking for Girl Scout books for my other bookshelf cookiesgsbooks. You can click on the link to be taken there. I am willing to trade books off of this bookshelf (crrcookie) to acquire books for that bookshelf (cookiesgsbooks). Just send me a PM from this bookshelf if you think that you might have something to trade.

I was blessed with a son in 2006 and expect that I will be getting into Boy Scouts in the near future and so I would like to expand my bookshelf to include any and all books that relate to Boy Scouts.

Crochet Books

I have several crochet books and pattern leaflets listed on my shelf. TBR means that I am still trying them out. After I try them out they may or may not be released. PC are the ones that I am keeping ... at least for the foreseeable future. AVL means that I am willing to part with these in a trade. In most all situations I will only trade the crochet books for other crochet books or patterns. It is hard enough for me to give them up as is. Lastly, I try to comply with copyright laws. Please do not offer to send me copied patterns from your book and please do not ask me to copy pages from mine to send to you.

My Participation in BookRings/BookRays/BookBoxes.

I do like to participate in BookRings and BookRays when I see something that I want to read on the forum. I would love to participate in Rings/Rays for books on my wish list as long as the books are not part of a series.

I have been very good about keeping the books moving and at most have only kept a book for about 3 weeks or so. Rings/Rays always have top priority on my To Be Read listing. If I feel that life might get in the way then I will ask to be skipped and hope that maybe I can get picked up again later.

If you are reading this and you are a participant in any BookRings/Rays please do your part to keep it moving. BookRings/Rays are a commitment to other BookCrossers and if you find that you are getting swamped, or life is getting in the way, or financial burdens get you down please make a journal entry to explain the situation and give all the participants peace of mind. No one likes a stalled BookRing/Ray.

I have participated in a couple of BookBoxes but usually only if I am very interested in the theme. I also like to participate in virtual bookboxes when I get the chance.

What is a "Ray It Forward"?

This is a special type of BookRay that does not have a list of participants. Each participant in the Ray It Forward is responsible for finding the next BookCrosser to pass the book to. Here is a link to a book that is a Ray It Forward so that you can read the complete "rules". Feel free to copy them for your own use.

Ray It Forward for Presumed Ignorant: Over 400 Cases of Legal Looniness, Daffy Defendants and Bloopers from the Bench

I wish everyone the best BookCrossing experience possible. I have made lots of new friends through this site and I love every minute of my participation here.
