I'm a "bookaholic". I HAVE to have at least 4 books waiting to be read. And I find it hard to part with books although I'll happily give copies away. My children and my oldest grandchild read a lot also. The two younger grandchildren (4 years & 11 months) are read to and the rule is: when Grandma's there, the TV is off & out come the books. Even the 11 month old understands turning pages. When I've read to my grandson's school class, several children told me that they do not have books at home and no one reads to them. I think that the way to get people to read is to start them as children. I give children books for every occasion. I hope others do.
