Extended Profile
Dec 2006: Mea culpa, I fell off the BookCrossing wagon this past year, as life just got too busy. I'm making amends as best I can, though it's clear I can't be as active a reader as I had been. My other book group fell into a lull but now there's a new
one at work, so I'm giving this a go, but there's no guarantee.
I "recently" got back into reading after years in grad school where I only read for work, never for pleasure. I read quite a few books ~13 years ago when I was put on bedrest, and once again enjoyed the pleasure of cruising through a book non-stop--I read "The Firm" in one sitting (laying down). It took me back to summer days in junior high when my sister and I would ride our bikes to the public library, bring home as many books as we could, and start reading as soon as we got home. With all that I have going on these days, I've learned that it often costs the same to buy the book and read it on my time as it does to check it out of the library, lose it, forget to renew it, and finally return it well overdue. A friend started a book group and we've read some wonderful books and I go even if I haven't read the book that month. And what better thing to do when I'm done than to pass it on! Another wonderful thing has happened with my intensified return to reading--my kids (13 & 9) are reading more too. I just keep them supplied with books and they'll just pick up a book and sit down with me.
There was no question in my mind when I heard of BookCrossing that I would do it, it just takes me time to figure out what to register (like it took 7 months to register my first book--hellooo, it's not like there aren't any books around here!) and where to release it. I like to read different things, and often have several books going at one time and pick up the one that grabs me most at the moment. I have lots that I want to read, but I'm also grateful for the exposure to other books that I get through my book group and BookCrossing. I'm still only releasing books that I've actually read, and if I've read it, it's gone or on its way out the door. I've been surreptitiously trying to recruit BC'rs by giving them registered books (not terribly effective so far). But, my interest in reading has really been elevated by BookCrossing. I just ... can't read enough!!
I'm willing to ship books on my shelf anywhere and will wild release anything I get from another Book Crosser that isn't part of a ring, ray, etc.
