Πριν πολλά χρόνια μαθητές σχολείου με ρώτησαν ποιά είναι η αφορμή για ένα ποίημα, πώς τη διακρίνουμε, πως την υποδεχόμαστε.
Με υπακοή στη φαντασίωση, απάντησα. Και για να περιορίσω κάπως την αοριστία, έφερα τούτο το παράδειγμα.
Περπατώ, όπως όλοι μας, σε μιάν έρημο απόλυτη. Εάν μου φανεί ότι άκουσα κελαηδισμό πουλιού, ας μου λέει η λογική ότι παραφέρομαι, εγώ, νοιώθω υποχρεωμένη να ετοιμάσω σ’ αυτό το πουλί ένα δέντρο.

Many years ago, some students asked me what the source of a poem can be, how
we can distinguish it, how we can welcome it.
By obeying fantasy, I answered. And trying to moderate the vagueness,
I gave this example.
I walk, as we all do, in an absolute desert. If I seem to hear the
singing of a bird, even if my commonsense tells me I'm mistaken, I
feel obliged to prepare, for that bird, a tree.
