If you know the book, 84 Charing Cross Road, You will know something of the romance of books and literature that so appeals to me. I am a potter and painter,a husband and father and, if I could, would sail in the wake of Capn. Joshua Slocum. I like the idea of wandering about the world sort of bumping into people, and I guess this is one way of doing it - via Bookcrossing!
84 Charing Cross Road is about an American lady, a true book lover, who began writing to a London bookshop, hence the title, with formal requests for the books she wanted. She received equally formal responses, couched in the language of the time and, of course, the books she so much wanted. Over the years the stiffly formal correspondence acquired warmth and familiarity. It's the sort of yarn that would appeal to perhaps more senior members, but I think the warm humanity and the love of books could touch any age.
