Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle.
~~Philo

I believe:
If everyone of us kept in mind
that everyone has at least one awful secret
that would make us catch our breath in sorrow,
the world would be a kinder place.

(inspired by POSTSECRET)

Why do I bookcross? :)

Well, I've been giving away books for as long as I can remember. I can't help myself--there seems to be a book for everything, and I'm compelled to make sure you get one. lol I get a charge out of connecting with people through the written word. And I'm totally sold on the concept of giving without strings. Ours is a cynical world, where nothing comes free, and bookcrossing offers a way to put some goodness out into the world. My goal is to give away 100,000 books in my lifetime! :)

And...as Henry Miller wrote: "A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. Like money, books must be kept in constant circulation...for books represent infinitely more than money."

When I give books to a specific person, I usually do some research to see what s/he likes--so----

Places I where I release books:
El Centro Naval Air Facility. The thrift shop especially because the money goes to help needy families on the base.
The Navy Base Community Center.
(Actually, all over the Navy Base--the most popular seems to be a shopping cart at the commissary!)

One of my favorite places to release books is at Juvenile Hall. I believe there are many kids in JH who may have never owned a book, or even read one; my fierce hope is that a kid's mind will be opened, that s/he'll see hope in the future, that something will be sparked because s/he had access to books. I include books for the staff as well.

I also release books all over town--the bank, the post office, the gas stations, local businesses, all on the sly. And I give books to friends all over the US. So far my books have touched lives in Finland, Spain, France, England, Scotland, Germany, and Malaysia.

I also release scads via RABCK to friends who pass them around where they live.

For some ideas on kindness

The success of love is in the loving;
it is not in the result of loving.
Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person,
but whether it turns out that way or not does not determine the value of what we have done.

This is cool. Please add yourself to my map if we've exchanged books or you've received a book from me.

I remember sneaking into the boxes in the middle of the night and reading in near darkness to escape detection.

She told me later that she came upon me once, and giggled to herself, then tiptoed away. (Why couldn't she've done that the time she caught me hawking on my brother from the top bunk!?)

I'm a friend of Bill W, and I've made the 12 steps into a neurotic art form.

****Please note: books on my bookshelf do not necessarily reflect my reading taste. I pick up books at thrift shops and the like just to release/share.

Here's how BookRays work. When you receive the book, make a journal entry to say you've received it, and then PM the next person in the list for their address. When you've read the book, make another journal entry relating your thoughts and opinions about the book, then send it to the next person. PM me with any questions. And if you want to join a bookray that's already in progress, PM me and I'll add you to the list.
