Couldn't put this book down and wore down my fingernails with tension. The author takes the wedding night of a 1960's marriage between a very young couple, fresh out of college, and builds, from their backstories, upon the weight of their expectations with a dreadful sense of foreboding. It is brilliant and immensely sad.How could it have played out as it did? Well, it's obvious in one respect, Edward maintaining his dignity and massaging hurt pride, and Florence doing the best she could realising her own needs. But as Edward scrabbles about with his life, we know nothing of Florence and I felt bereft at the end that I had no closure for her. Perhaps Florence didn't need it, I don't know. Just read it and feel that gnawing ache of despair I had at every page...
