Journal Entry 1 by biondino from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 19, 2003

A charming and funny book, whimsical, ironic and sometimes affected. It seems at times almost like an exercise in writing a certain way, and the chapter structure, whereby the relationship between each short story is often tenuous, giving Sedaris the oppoortunity to explore whatever emotion or theme on which he's focusing.

Certain chapters (and this is admittedly on only one reading) didn't do it for me at all, while others had me creasing up with laughter. I personally found it slightly disappointing that the way the book was written didn't allow for any satisfying character arcs and resolution, but each story, viewed as a stand-alone tableau, worked extremely well.

I should add that this book was originally sent to me from a friend in North Carolina, so it's already been across the Atlantic twice - I wonder if it'll pop up in Europe again...
