I loved this memoir written like a novel. It offers both personal drama (including a very real love relationship) and "insider" historical perspective on a country that seems destined for chaos.

I'm looking forward to reading this! It arrived today. I'm planning to start it tonight, as soon as I have a nice, hot bath and I get into my jammies. Thanks for sharing, Pam!

What was it about Haiti that kept Kathie Klarreich coming back to it? I never could figure out the charm of a country where the people live in devastating poverty and the leaders are corrupt and kill all who oppose them.

Journal Entry 5 by JDT from Pleasanton, California USA on Thursday, January 26, 2006
Looking forward to this book about a country/people that seem so intriguing, yet so chaotic. Our son has a good friend (fellow MD) whose grandfather started a health clinic in Haiti years ago, PLUS another good friend in the foreign service whose first assignment was 2 years in Haiti! Thanks, Dreamer2 and debnance! Will read and send along.

Journal Entry 6 by JDT from Pleasanton, California USA on Saturday, April 01, 2006
This was a wonderful book - in a sometimes inexplicable, mind-expanding way. We've probably all had an experience in another area or country that feels so special, so right, we imagine living there. For me, it's the beach, or in the mountains, or Italy. Then reality kicks in - considerations of family, friends - and we decide to be content with an occasional visit. But this author's pull to a totally different culture is quite compelling. The attraction to such a complex and conflicted man and country makes for an amazing story. "Why had Haiti embraced me where it repelled others? How was it that the things that scared off others charmed and attracted me? 28 And a bit of explanation/resolution at the end: " Because of Jean Raymond, I am wiser, more compassionate, and more passionate. Because of Haiti, there are alternative ways of looking at the world and living life." Appreciated the chance to read this. I'm sending it on to onefinetabby.
