Annie ist eine attraktive Frau um die vierzig. Sie und ihr Mann Blake, ein erfolgreicher Anwalt, leben in Kalifornien. Als ihre 17-jährige Tochter Natalie erstmals für längere Zeit das Elternhaus verlässt, muss Annie lernen, ihre Tochter loszulassen. Doch das ist nicht alles. Kaum sitzt Natalie im Flugzeug, teilt Blake seiner Frau mit, dass er sich scheiden lassen will. Annie verliert den Boden unter den Füßen: Wer ist sie, wenn sie nicht die perfekte Ehefrau und Mutter sein kann? Sie flieht zu ihrem bärbeißigen Vater Hank nach Mystic, Washington, an den Ort ihrer Kindheit. Und trifft dort unvermutet auf Nick, ihre erste große Liebe
