amazon.de synopsis:
Arthur Darvill reads this exclusive audio adventure featuring the Eleventh Doctor and Amy. When the Tardis lands on Orkney in the near future, the Doctor and Amy arrive to find a large demonstration in progress over the construction of new electricity pylons. The Doctor tries to break things up peacefully - but suddenly the road splits open without warning and swallows police, security guards and protestors alike. Separated from the Doctor, Amy takes charge of transporting the wounded to hospital - but the rescue mission becomes a terrifying ride as the pylons come to life and begin to walk and the road rears up, erupting with boiling tarmac...The Doctor, meanwhile, has even more than metal monsters and rebellious roads to deal with. Who is sucking the life out of the power company's employees - and just what is lurking inside the Astra-Gen headquarters? Written specially for audio by Stephen Cole and read by Arthur Darvill (Rory in the TV series), "The Ring of Steel" features the Doctor as played by Matt Smith in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television.

Arthur Darvill is a gorgeous reader - but one single CD for a whole Doctor-adventure?? Quite disappointing!

TARDIS materialized here. I can't wait listening to it.

Journal Entry 4 by RikkiDD at Dresden, Sachsen Germany on Tuesday, August 2, 2011
This new adventure is really short.
This time the story is playing in our own future - a really good idea, with the new electricitay pylons closer to daily live as ever. Only I miss a bit of the action of former stories. Through the shortness the plot can not develop.
Arthur Carvill reads it well, but can not whitewash the weakness of the book.

RikkiDD missed the action? How much more action can you put into an one-CD-story? Well, it was enough action for me ;-)
Unlike most of the DW-audiobooks I listened to so far, this one is what we call in German an inszenierte Lesung (I'd say). Unfortunatly all the background noise kept me constantly distracted and it was quite hard for me to follow, although the story in itself is not very complicated. But all in all it is a proper Doctor Who story and Arthur Darvill is a gorgeous reader, I agree.

These two audiobooks were just handed to me by my postman... that must have been the third or fourth time for any postman to come across me at my flat in ... five years. Timing for the audiobooks is perfect too - I have 6 hours of driving tomorrow and another six hours of driving on tuesday - even though I have two audiobook-rings still here I think I will need them all (I suspect I will start with these two though ;-) But I will realy need something to take my mind of the cause of the trip (funeral).

Edit 24.09.2011:
As planned I listened to this audiobook on the car-ride back from the Lake Constance. I´d have much prefered it to have traveled there a week later for the convention, than for the reasons I had to go. My mind was pretty preoccupied and the other two audiobooks I tried to listen to didn´t work for me on that day! It was a good thing too, that I listened to "The Runaway Train" first, which was a pretty good Doctor Who story. It got me in the right mood for another Doctor story, even if it wasn´t one of the better ones.
Spoiler in white, mark to read:
The story is set in the near futur (15 years from now) on some remote island. Some power company is putting up huge power poles. The people living on the island are protesting against it. They think it disfigures the view and natur and will be bad for tourism (sounds vaguely familiar - my parents live in Niedersachsen where the new high energy line is supposed to run... ;-)
Of course the whole thing has been undermined by bad aliens who are not quite THAT bad because they are only doing what they are programmed to do because they are not realy a race but a leftover weapon programmed for a war long since over...
A nice twist was, that those people protesting weren´t quite as bad as the people around my parents place, because they argued, that there was enough energy to go around with the tidal generating plants and the wind energy plants.... I get the feeling people at the moment are protesting everything and the energy is just supposed to come out of the socket...
It wasn´t realy a story to my liking - too violent and to little Doctor like. I suppose the story got seriosly shortend and by that lost a lot. The general idea is nice though.
