Product Description
Suddenly realizing what's important in life (with the help of a bunny), a man quits his job and heads to the countryside in this internationally bestselling comic novel.
"Which of us has not had that wonderfully seditious idea: to play hooky for a while from life as we know it?" With these words from his foreword, Pico Iyer puts his finger on the exhilaratingly anarchic appeal of The Year of the Hare.
While out on assignment, a journalist hits a hare with his car. This small incident becomes life-changing: he decides to quit his job, leave his wife, sell his possessions, and spend a year wandering the wilds of Finland-with the bunny as his boon companion.

Sent to eponine38 as a wishlist book :)
Thank you so much for this book sent via the Wishlist Tag game. It looks great [especially since I love bunnies :-).
Fun! Very wacky story but touching as well. First published in 1975, the story begins with something that many of us are probably tempted to do: ditch the stress of our working and personal life and just take off for the wilderness without a real plan and certainly without a to-do list. This Kaarlo Vatanen does after he and a colleague hit and injure a hare while traveling on a business trip. Vatanen fixes the hare's leg and they set off on an impromptu wandering covering much of the country.
Their many adventures are entertaining while poking fun at different aspects of society. My favorite was when Vatanen meets a man who is convinced that Finnish president Kekkonen has been replaced by an impostor. He has spent much time gathering supporting evidence for this theory, based on a study of the president's cranium.
Of course, I have a real soft spot for any story about the relationship between humans and animals, but that's just one of many reasons I enjoyed this book. It's something that can be read on any level you choose: silly adventure, animal story, allegory...

It will definitely be a while before I get to this one, since I have quite a few up before this. I promise to read it an send it to the next person as soon as I can.

Thanks for including me in this Ray. I did enjoy the book...it reminded me of another book I recently read, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Having just vacationed in Scandinavia (not Finland, though), I particularly liked the setting. I'll be PMing the next reader to get her address.
Thanks for sharing this book and for sending it my way! :)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
The book was left at a coffee table during our monthly meetup!
In my hands now. Curious to read it!
It took me a while to finish it although I am a quick reader. I enjoyed the first chapter but I found boring the rest of the book. I read it all right hoping it might surprise me at the end but it didn't...
