"Two young Boys suddenly disappear. One of them, a Zuni, leaves a pool of blood behind. Lt. Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police tracks the brutal killer. Three things complicate the search: an archeological dig, a steel hypodermic needle and the strange laws og the Zuni."

Interesting story in American Indian context.

Wow, an early Tony Hillerman never translated into Finnish, straight from my wishlist — and it's here! Thank you so much for this wonderful RABCK, dschinny.
I think I'll read this one pretty soon because I want to reserve it for a Purpose. ;-)
This Friday the 13th has been really lucky. First, someone very dear to me got good news about her health and now this book. I'm so happy. :D

ETA, on Nov. 20, 2015 that Dance Hall of the Dead has brought the author at least two awards:
1974 Edgar Award for Best Novel and French 1987 Grand prix de littérature policière, Romans étrangers (International Award).

Like always, I can't say much about the crime story (sometimes I do, however, recognize the criminal quite early, and this time it did happen) but I do love both the way Hillerman writes and, especially, the Native American side of the story. I so enjoyed this book. Thanks for letting me do it, dschinny!
Dance Hall of the Dead was in Palkintokaappi (“Trophy Cabinet”), a Finnish VBB including award winning/nominated books. And it was picked up by pippis. So, this book is reserved for her.

With this book, I'm participating so called Ammattihaaste (“Occupation challenge”) in the Finnish Forum.
Joe Leaphorn is Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant, Pasquaanti is Zuñi Police Chief. One of the great advantages of a Native American working among Tribal Police is that he knows the Native (in Leaphorn's case Navajo) culture. He knows when to wait and when to act, when to speak and when to be silent etc., and that's why he learns more about people & crimes he's investigation than those who don't understand the culture. Another thing is, there may be jurisdictional problems, like demarcation. Pasquaanti needs to make sure that County Deputy Sheriff, State Policeman and Leaphorn all understand that on the Zuñi reservation the investigations would be run by Zuñi police.
There are two anthropologists, professor Reynolds and young Ted Isaacs working at an anthropological dig site. ”His hands worked with delicate speed, blunt, callused fingers eliminating most of the stones automatically, rejecting others after a quick exploratory touch, finally pausing with a chip no larges than a toenail clipping. This chip Isaacs examined, squinting in concentration. He put it into his mouth, cleaned it quickly with his tongue, spit, and reexamined it.”

A Hillerman in the mail - what could be better? I wonder if it would be possible to take all my TBR Hillermans and concentrate on just them over Christmas...sofa, blanket, choc and some red and a pile of guaranteed good reads. Sounds like my kind of bliss!

Thank you ever so much, Tarna!
