Journal Entry 1 by JudySlump612 from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Monday, July 04, 2011
I picked this up because Muriel Spark is such a gifted writer, I knew that the biography section would be enjoyably readable; and especially because I wanted the critical discussion of 'Frankenstein,' a work I was then struggling with. Both of these expectations were amply satisfied. The cover blurb calls this a "highly sympathetic biography" and it is, but not to the point of blindness. It's thorough, well-researched, and does a good job of giving us the background context to Mary's life. It takes up just over half the book. The remainder, the critical section, is even better, exactly what one would expect from a writer of Spark's level of insight and skill. I'm pleased to offer this book to other book lovers, with the hope that future readers will enjoy it as much as I did.
