de Waal inherited hundreds of netsuke (small Japanese carvings) and uses them as a starting point to trace some of his ancestors. He investigates his family from 1890's Paris where they are successful and very rich bankers, through to Venice where their opulent lifestyle is altered when Austria becomes part of the German empire in 1914.
I enjoyed this as a personalised book of history, and some of his relatives sound fascinating and their lifestyle amazing. Post WWII the story becomes slightly frustrating as he does not disclose as much, especially about the uncle he inherited the netsuke from.
Read for the Gutterbook shop book club.

I left this in a shed decorated by the author Joanne Harris, painted to look like the sky with beautiful crystals hanging from the ceiling.

Found it in the Joanne Harris shed that was on our headland. Knowing that the shed was being sold after it's summer stay, I decided to read the book inbetween times.
I was keen to read it, the blurb was very encouraging, however as much as I wanted to follow this journal, I found myself becoming more indifferent to this family... so gave up on it about half way through.
Just as well as the shed and book have now gone to the new owners in Lewes Sussex.
