Journal Entry 1 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Monday, September 15, 2003
Book 1 of the Song of Ice and Fire series. If you're looking for a good fantasy book, look no more for you have found it. Martin is a master storyteller, weaving together stories and a multitude of characters. Not only is his story gripping and compelling, but he also "plays for keeps." You never know who might die and who might live or what might happen to your favorite characters. He also sees the world in shades of grey rather than just strictly good or evil. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the characters, which adds even more depth to the story. From the back cover: In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hang perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Journal Entry 6 by katayoun from Tehran, Tehran Iran on Monday, November 17, 2003
nearly done and still haven't heard from wickedwordz, i'll try again tomorrow. and so about the book, well i like fantasy like mckillip or wynne jones, and this wasn't that kind of a fatasy and no wizards or magic flying about and so it was not my cup of fantasy, but then it was really nicely written and the charcters were captivating and nothing was standing still. except maybe for one or two people here were no one dimensional good or bad, and though you might have sided with one or the other, they all had some weaknesses and a something likable about them, yup now that i'm writing about it i can see that i really liked the people, they were real; just exciting and fantastic also; more real, maybe? :) thanks karendawn for this ring and my first experience with George R.R. Martin.

Wow. And again I say, WOW! This just keeps you guessing until the very end, and none of the characters are exempt from trial and suffering! This is the first George R. R. Martin book I've read, and I'm so impressed, I think I have a new author to add to my favorites list! It goes from a two sided conflict, to three way, to possibly a 4 way conflict towards the end. And generally you get a feeling towards one side or the other, you favor one side or the other, but to like characters from all the sides of the conflict, that is something different I feel! Thanks so much for this ring karendawn, this is a new discovery I'm quite pleased with! I really appreciate finding this author! Will be sending out 1/17/04 to dragonfly4 in Canada. Enjoy!

This is a fantastic book. Once I was able to sort out who was who, I was really pulled into the story. I can't wait to find out what happens to the characters next. Does anyone know if there if a bookring for the second book? If not, I'll see if I can get my hands on it. Thanks so much karendawn. Sent March 12 to ladyoflight.

Incredible book! All I have ever asked from authors is that they write books that engross me (not too much to ask). Well, George R.R. Martin does exactly that. I could not put this book down. The plot keeps moving. The characters are not cardboard cut-outs. Plus, surprises galore. You never quite know what's going to happen. I could gush over this book for quite a while, but I'll stop now. I'll be purchasing the first three books in the series very soon (who ever said BC discourages book buying), and I'll be sending this off to BountifulPots this week. Thanks for the introduction to this great author, karendawn.

I must apologize for how long it's taken me to journal this, but I wil say that it's already on its way to the next person in line, and should hopefully be there shortly. That being said... WOW! I have, most definitely, found another author to add to my favorites list. After finishing this one, I went right out and bought it along with the next two books in the series. Martin truly has a skill for making realistic characters: ones that you love, ones that you hate, and ones that you're never sure of what they will do. Thank you so much for making this one available, it's truly epic fantasy at its finest!

Received today - thanks! Have only ever read a short story by George R. R. Martin, so am looking forward to a full fantasy novel by this author. Update - 4th July. Am about half way through and really enjoying it! I initially thought I would never understand the relationship between all the characters, but it all falls into place!

Journal Entry 28 by Eucalia from Snoqualmie, Washington USA on Thursday, February 10, 2005

Wow, what a good book! I finished reading this late last night (early this morning) and I'm already looking for the sequel. So many characters and so many plot twists and it left such a lot of openings for the sequel! Thanks for sharing with me and introducing me to a new (to me) author! I already have the book packaged up and ready to be sent to the next person on the list. I should be able to get to the post office tomorrow. I took this book with me on one of my hiking trips: here's a picture of it on Mt. Chuckanut in northwest Washington looking out over the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.
