Journal Entry 1 by Elddau1 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Monday, June 20, 2011

from wikipedia: 'The Old Man and the Sea is a novella written by American author Ernest Hemingway, written in 1951 in Cuba and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.' * Bought for countdebeans at one of our favourite bookshops, Canty's Bookshop of Fyshwick in Canberra, as he is a Hemingway fan now. It is also on the 1001 booklist.

Journal entry for countdebeans (his logon's not working): Rating: 9/10 This novella isn't exactly a long read, but it is an amazing piece and worth reading slowly. It is hard to imagine how Hemingway came up with a simple genius idea but I guess that's what made him what he was. It would be interesting to know how long it took to craft something like this when it is just so concise. Great read.

Rating: 7.5 /10 This was very well written and drew me into the struggle of the old man. Vivid descriptions and fast pace to the action based on the use of direct statements. It was a bit too ‘fishy’ for me sometimes, being a bit repetitive in the middle. It would appeal to fishermen / women, like ‘angler’s porn’. :-). At least it’s short and a quick read so I could get past those bits. I enjoyed seeing the life in the village and meeting the villagers more.
