Journal Entry 1 by Elddau1 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Monday, June 20, 2011

from back cover: 'First published in 1911. Ethan Frome is widely regarded as Edith Wharton's most revealing novel and her finest achievement in fiction. Set in the bleak, barren winter lanscape of New England, it is the tragic tale of a simple man, bound to the demands of his farm and his tyrannical, sickly wife, Zeena, and driven by his star-crossed love for Zeena's young cousin, Mattie Silver... Ethan Frome stands as one of the great classics of twentieth-century American literature.' * In my hunt for '1001 Books' I came across this at one of my favourite book shops, The Book Grocer in Kingston, Canberra.

Journal Entry 2 by Elddau1 at Yass, New South Wales Australia on Monday, June 20, 2011
Rating: 8.5-9* This was a very good book. I really ‘enjoyed’ reading it. It was very well written and had impact. It is deserving of being on the 1001 book list. The story was real (if a little dramatic) and the characters were well drawn. The descriptions of the landscape and surroundings were very well done and you could imagine exactly what it looked like, felt like and smelled like. Surprisingly the language and style was very accessible considering the book was written in 1911. The story though a grim one is based on a true-sounding account of what life would have been like in New England at the time. It was a harsh environment and nature was cruel. People likewise had to be tough and they suffered. This will be a book that I remember.
