Sent to Meg72 to celebrate International Womens' Day.
Book arrived safe and sound! I think I am going to enjoy this story...Ah, and I loved the postcards :-)
Although I don´t agree with the main idea in this book - that the solution to a midlife crisis is an affair - I have to confess I had a hard time putting it down, because the author´s prose is very appealing.
Jessie is an artist, turned housewife, who, at 42, finds her life in a rut. When she is informed that her mother has just chopped off one of her fingers and is acting very strange, Jessie seizes the opportunity to get away from her mundane life and husband, although returning to her home island brings her sad memories of her father´s death in a boat accident. While she is trying to figure out what is the cause of her mum´s strange behaviour, she meets Brother Thomas, a monk that confined himself to a monastery to escape the memories of his wife´s death. The two feel an instant attraction but can their feelings survive the “real world” beyond the shores of Egret Island?
Like I said above, the book is beautifully written, for the author is very good at describing the wild landscapes of Egret Island and you feel like you´re actually smelling the sea and feeling the wind ruffle your hair while watching a stalk soar through the skies. There is also a very interesting mix of religion and mythology and how they sometimes get muddled up to create a story, or belief, that holds so strong that it can make a person do strange things.
As for the affair between Jessie and Brother Thomas, although it seemed a bit rushed, I can understand that, for a person seeking meaning and a way out to anywhere, a monk (a good looking one!) can easily become a kind of saviour.
A enjoyed the ending, I did not find it too sugary sweet (for that, we have chick-lit!) and I think the main character grew up a bit and discovered that the solution to dissatisfaction is mainly found within.
