"To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer." I read this on audio from the library a while back, but snagged this copy at the Hachette warehouse sale, figuring it would be good for a trade. :') (Unabridged on 9 CD's; read by Michal Friedman, Ellen Archer, Suzanne Toren, & Robert Petkoff) My thoughts when I read it last year: I can't wait to discuss this one at book club. And it's hard to give a review without revealing spoilers, so I can't say as much as I want to say. Told from the point of view of a 5-year-old boy who's lived his whole life trapped in an 11'x11' room with his mother, it's refreshingly original. My initial impression, before starting the book, was that it was going to almost be a horror book of sorts, based on the description. But this story runs the spectrum of emotions -- from desperation, anger, frustration...to hope, joy, and discovery. The plot didn't follow along necessarily the way I expected it to, and that was refreshing as well. Overall, I highly recommend this one. It brings to the surface so many issues I really want to discuss with other readers of this book.

I wanted to keep this one, but lacked enough audiobooks to make it happen. Perhaps another round! This book enjoyed a brief stay in San Jose, California, before continuing its travels in booklady331's Audio Bookbox!
