Reading on my jollies
ETA Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2005.
When art historian Max Morden returns to the seaside village where he once spent a childhood holiday, he is both escaping from a recent loss and confronting a distant trauma.
Released for the 2011 Travel Challenge - couldn't resist when I found out the town in this novel was Ballymore and the village Ballyless :)
I had difficulty getting my bearings with this one but I found it all fell into place and was worth the journey - enjoy

Journal my books will you Diane? Well two can play at that game!
I got this from the shelf in the Baltic and also picked up a couple of others, but this was the one I came for. Booker winners are a good bet in my experience and Banville was interviewed on Radio 4 recently and sounded interesting. I mentally added him to the list of authors I intend to read but probably won't get round to, so when I saw this was travelling, thought I'd go for it.
Thanks :)

This was my holiday book while in Edinburgh but I didn't finish it before coming home. I really enjoyed it. Not quite sure how it managed to win the Booker - it must have been a spare year - but it is beautifully written in a sort of gentle prose with very few errors. The dick sucking reviews printed all over it are a little over blown but it's very funny in places and very clever in it's study of a normal guy grieving. The things he pays attention to are well chosen. He held my interest over so many pages where nothing happens & I liked the revelations at the end.
