The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches
16 journalers for this copy...
Alone with their authoritarian father on a vast estate where time has stopped, two siblings speak a language and inhabit a surreal universe of their own making, shaped by their reading of philosophy and tales of chivalry. When their father dies and the children set out to bury him, they encounter the inhabitants of the neighboring village, and the pair's cloak of romance and superstition falls away to reveal the appalling truth of their existence. A brilliant, masterful story in which nothing is as it first seems, The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches is a triumph of suspense, linguistic invention, and playfulness that peers into the heart of guilt, cruelty, and violence.
Yikes. I realised I had read this already, must have been some years ago, pre-BC. But I couldn't remember what it was about so I read it again. Yikes.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This was posted as part of a birthday parcel to another bookcrosser, azuki. She received a card in her mailbox saying she had a parcel to pick up but when she went to get it, they couldn't find it. Who knows where it went, but it hasn't come back to me.
Journal Entry 3 by VeganMedusa at Invercargill, Southland New Zealand on Thursday, September 22, 2011
It came back to me after 3 months. Available again, as I've sent her another parcel of books to replace the missing one.
Given to another bookcrosser I met up with today.
Thank you for meeting me while I was passing through Invercargill.
Journal Entry 6 by kiwiinengland at Stewart Island, Southland New Zealand on Friday, January 4, 2013
Wow! I read this short story while holidaying in Stewart Island. The style of writing was unique and for a while I thought it was just setting itself up for an obvious turn of events but....nope. It was a piece of writing that will make me ponder for a long time.
Thanks so much for bringing it to the museum in Invercargill.

If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.

Thanks KiwiinENgland for taking this to the Wellington BX meeting at D4. I somehow think I was in such a hurry to leave early (attracted by a lamb shank dinner) that I forgot to thank you at the time. I'll be sure to have this on its way to Edwardstreet shortly.
666 Challenge starting off well so far and this will help.

Journal Entry 10 by Sherlockfan at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Saturday, January 19, 2013
Wow! this was one extraordinary yet thought-provoking book. I guess the title led me to expect something rather different - too much was left to the imaginative speculation in so far as the title went. The writing is quite different from anything else I've come across. The author's descriptive writing is masterly but after life of reading crime stories I'd have preferred a trifle more I-dotting and t-crossing. Confess that I never quite got to grips with the Fair Punishment. Had to suspend a certain amount of skepticism. Our Dept. of Social Welfare would have field day with this family. Nevertheless there remains a lot to ponder upon and I did find it riveting. Will post to Edwardstreet on Tuesday when long QB holiday weekend is over.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Will be posted to Lauraloo29 once I have her address.
How very weird and unusual this was. I am pleased it was a small book as I don't think I could have coped with much more of the depravity, strangeness that was this family's world. Not sure if I know what this was all about.

Arrived safe and sound today. I'm in the middle of another bookring. No worries. I will keep this moving. :)
I couldn't get into this book. I was first attracted to the title, but clearly that wasn't enough. I already have the next address. The book will be on its way next week. Thank you for sharing!
Got the book today.
I have a couple of books ahead of me to read but since I have a long weekend from work (4 days off). I should be able to read it during those days!

Second time around that I read a translation of a novel originally written in French, which I don’t mind. But here, the structures of the sentences were quite hard to follow and the story is getting way too philosophical. Not that I don’t like philosophy, it’s just too much here. And I had a hard time getting into the story… so much that I simply stopped reading. It might be an acclaimed author but that’s not enough for me to go on reading a book. This one simply isn’t doing the trick.
I'll pm the next reader and get the book moving in the coming days.
EDIT: the book is now travelling to the next reader as of April 8th.

This book has just arrived. I'll get started right away!
On its way to starrdust!
A fascinating read. 'Enjoyed' isn't the right word because this story is a little demented and strange. I did like it though. The pace is rather slow at first. (I didn't mind too much.) Once the action picks up, watch out. That's where things really get interesting. And the ending was so moving.
I'm glad I took the time to read this little book. Thank you, KiwiinEngland!

Picked this little book up from the Post Office today and I'm looking forward to reading it. Thanks for the note and Pensacola Beach bookmark, Elsiah!
This book was indeed strange and not always easy to read although I did persevere to the end. The writing style is definitely unique. I've sent a message to Kobie03 to get the next address.
Kobie03 asked to be skipped so this book has been sent on its way to mssaver who is next on the list.
I just got the book this afternoon, and I'll be reading it after I finish the book I'm reading now. Looking forward to it.
Oh, yes, thanks, starrdust!
Interesting book, and it's on its way to Pam99.
arrived safely yesterday, I've got two books on the go just now and will read this one next
a weird book - difficult to read in places and one of those that you wished your French was good enough to read in the original! PM'ing the next reader for an address...

This was a jaw-dropping read, surreal and belieavable at the same time, the story kept twisting and suprising to the end.
I've now added the rest of Soucy's books to my wishlist!
I'll be sending this off as soon as I get the next reader's address.

How very strange this book was, but I can see how it came to be chosen for a literary prize. I'm not sure that "enjoy" was the right word for this story; I found it very interesting and thought provoking, and certainly didn't see some of those twists coming!
Thank you very much for sharing. Now ready to pass on to the next in line...

Shock! Horror! On returning from holiday, I discovered a bag under my bed (how on earth it got there I do not know), containing a number of unopened book crossing envelopes, some books and some labels - and also THIS poor book!! I have had andrasthe's address for quite some time now (embarrassed little throat-clearing cough) and will be passing it on as soon as humanly possible.
So, so sorry for holding this up!!

arrived safely :)

This book was thoroughly intruiging and at the same time utterly unbearable. It was like trying to see something in a dark place, something that is there, can be vaguely guessed, but not entirely made out. Every step closer helps diminish the blurriness and helps reveal what is waiting there, right in front of you. And although you have a bad feeling, you move forward, try to make sense of what you see, finally manage to put the pieces together and then somehow wish you could unsee it entirely.
This step-by-step approach manages to pull the reader into the maelstrom of this remarkably cruel tale. Its brutality so subtle at times, it only haunts the mind later - in retrospective of the unfolding events. And while there are a lot of things that bring unease and terror, for me the most disturbing revelation had to do with the cursive l.
The beauty and density of the language sets a stark contrast to the lightness of the narrator's voice. It was something else entirely. I have to say this is a great and likewise unnerving book.
Thank you for including me.

finally on the way
The book is here with me, thank you for sending it! :)
Wow! A book that provoked my interest in understanding what it was talking about in some specific moments. I can say that I liked the book and it certainly got me by surprise the author's narrative which I found somehow special, plus as I was turning the pages and getting closer to the end, I was left wih some questions and thoughts.
Passing it on to Mary-T!
Passing it on to Mary-T!
The little girl arrived yesterday here in Germany. Many thanks. :)
I'm really curious about this book due to the comments here. I'll start it as soon as I'm finished with my actual reading.
... I've just read the lines from Wittgenstein now and have to admit: Ido not understand and I fear it's not a language issue...
6-February 2014
I've started to read...
13-February 2014
Well - I've made it halfway through, then I've decided to quit.
I have no interest at all to read on... and since there are sooo many books to read, I am no longer keep reading what I don't really like.
Sorry, but this seems not to be my type...
Tomorrow this book will travel again.

Book has arrived to its lucky last reader safely in Melbourne
Well I finally got around to reading this - for a short book I really struggled. I thought the author was one of those gee aren't I clever no your not a clever writer wouldn't disenfranchise so many readers. Anyway its done and I shall give to Kiwiinengland as she passes through Melbourne on her way home
Received from billbooks after my two week trip around Australia. Thanks everyone for taking part in the bookring.
It certainly seems this was a marmite type of book for readers in this ring, you either loved it or hated it. The book will pause with me for a bit before I decide what to do with it.
