The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Perennial Classics)

Having seen the movie many years ago & enjoyed it, I found that could not get out of my head the idea of Maggie Smith 'being' Miss Jean Brodie.
It is a long while ago since saw the movie but seems to me that the Jean Brodie of the novel is a much more complicated character and not so likeable.
The story takes place in the 1930's when women of a certain class were beginning to break out from the bounds of motherhood and the home. It was a time of conflict on many fronts and Jean Brodie seems to bring out the best & worst of this changing world. I the one hand she is a figure to be admire - one who is trying to broaden the minds of you the young women in her charge.
On the other hand she is manipulative, obsessive and in many ways shocking...
An interesting novella that leaves one with quite a lot to think about...
