"The action of The Vatican Cellars takes place in the late nineteenth century, chiefly in Paris and Rome. This strange drama involves the alleged abduction of the Pope, a "miraculous" conversion, swindling, adultery, bastardy and murder. The characters are a motley crew of noblemen, saints, adventurers and pickpockets - and Lafcadio Wluiki. This picaresque Lafcadio, one of the most original creations in twentieth-century fiction, at once attracts and repels; he is the instrument through whom Gide works out the idea of the unmotivated crime, a theme which constantly occupied him, and which in this book receives its fullest treatment."

haven't finished it yet, but its good... basically its funny. quite mocking, mixing intellectual arguments with mundane stuff like getting bitten by bugs. much better than I expected, I read straight is the gate by the same author and thought it was boring, but this is fun to read... he is definitely a good writer, I'll release it back into york I think.

I've finished it now.... didn't like the last few chapters much, but it's still good. A lot of these books probably end up being kept in lost property offices.... they get found by people who work in the places where they are left and taken away... well lets see what happens if you leave one in the library......
