This is an interesting-looking horror anthology that I picked up at the Comic Store today; it was the lovely skeletal figure on the cover that caught my eye, and when I found that "Thurnley Abbey" is one of the stories included, I had to pick it up. Turns out that "Thurnley Abbey," an old favorite of mine, is presented here in text form with a few handsome illustrations, while the rest of the stories are original works by several different graphic novelists, including a "Hellboy" adventure by Mike Mignola. (For more info on the book, see the Dark Horse web site.)

*** Later: You've got to love a book that's dedicated to "Hans Holzer, Edward Gorey, and the Fox Sisters"! This was a very enjoyable collection, overall. The illustrated stories were written for this collection by a variety of authors/artists, and range from "exceedingly creepy" to "subtly disturbing" to "heart-warming" (not necessarily in that order). These are all ghost stories in the classic mold - very little gore or explicit gruesomeness, but lots of shadows and shudders. I've read stronger tales, but these were quite enjoyable (and the old classic "Thurnley Abbey" is just as chilling as I remember). This book would make a handsome addition to anyone's ghost-story collection - and I think I'm going to get another copy for mine!

Released on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at Trader Joe's Grocery, near TJ Maxx Plaza in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts USA.

I plan to leave this book at Trader Joe's at around 3:30 pm. [I'm stopping by to see if they have any pumpkins - I know I've left it a bit late! - and I may pick up one of their fabulous preseasoned frozen racks of lamb as well.] Then I'm stopping by the Wine Society at the other end of the strip mall to see if there are any Halloween specialty beers that interest me...

I will also tuck in a newspaper clipping about Downtown Nashua' "Great American Ghost Town" event, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30 from 4 to 8 pm (click here for more info).

Well, this is my new "longest time in the wild before a catch" book - even though I'm the one who caught it! I spied it in a Halloween display at the local Savers (they sell donated goods of all kinds, and I sometimes shop for books there). When I opened the book and saw the BC label I hoped for a brief moment that it was someone else's release, but then I recognized one of my own. Still very cool to see the book safe after all this time!

I don't always buy my BC books when I find them in charity shops or secondhand bookstores; sometimes I'll note the BCID and update the release notes to their new location. But in this case, since it was released so long ago, and since it is a perfect seasonal release, I bought it back to release in October - unless I included it in September's "Such an Animal" challenge first!
