I've been intrigued by this series (illustrated by Takeshi Obata, also known for Death Note) since I first read about it in TV Tropes, and when I came across a few volumes at Harrison's Comics in the Pheasant Lane Mall I couldn't resist picking them up (though I still want to find the first few volumes). The concept: Hikaru, a sixth-grader, discovers an old Go board in his grandfather's attic - a board that seems to have bloodstains on it. When he touches it, the spirit of a Heian-era noble, Sai, manifests itself; it seems that Sai was an avid Go player, and now he wants to play again, via Hikaru. By this volume of the series, Hikaru has become interested in playing on his own, though of course he's not nearly as adept as he is when Sai controls his moves. But he can play online as "Sai", winning so many matches that the Go community becomes wildly curious as to exactly who this Sai is...
This volume has a story-so-far section to help catch up on the action, and opens in the middle of an online match between Hikaru (and Sai) vs. Akira. Akira, a prodigy, is sure that the naive schoolmate Hikaru couldn't possibly be the same person who played him so strongly, but can he prove it?
We learn more about Sai's past, and why he's been haunting the Go board all this time. There are some charming and funny scenes between Sai and Hikaru as Hikaru begins to show more of an interest in the game. And we get to see how Go tournaments are set up, along with tips on learning to play. It's rather fun to see how much drama can result from a plot based on a board game {grin}.
