This book arrived over the weekend and I am looking forward to reading it -- I have another in the series sitting on Mt TBR, but since this is the first in the series, I will read it first.

Thanks, mathgirl, for sending it along and thanks, CanadaPost, for getting your act together and resuming service!

Very compelling! For all the challenges of reading a book set in a foreign culture with difficult names, it was nearly impossible to put down. The mystery aspect was well done, the characters were compelling, the insight into the culture of Iceland was fascinating, and the implications of the genetic research was rather chilling. Particularly awful was the callous disregard for the feelings of the family of Audur in the way she was treated when she died and well beyond that time.

Would definitely recommend this book to others. Probably will add this back to the International Mystery VBB rotation for others to enjoy.

ETA: Am returning this to the VBB queue today (9/30/11).

Thank you both for offering this book, and you 60f8 for sending it (and the cards!!)~~I'm really looking forward to reading this! Warning, tho, I am way behind. So much so, that the mail just being brought in and piled, and it's been so nuts I totally forgot a yellow envelope arrived a few days ago!

Who would have thought that Iceland's Fall was rain, rain, rain, rain. Not me~that was a surprise. I did really like getting a look inside this very foreign-to-me country. But I did not find it as compelling as 6of8, at least not
for quite a ways into it. During the first part of the book, I kept setting it down, as it just wasn't grabbing me. I felt like the sleazeball got his just desserts, and Erlendur was.... well, just not a character I could connect with. It wasn't until he began discovering his own humanity that I finally became interested in him. It seemed to me there were a lot of cold and /or calloused people in this book. Maybe 'police proceduals' just aren't my sort of mystery.

But the mystery was well-done, the trail incredibly intriguing, and ultimately I did get into
the book. And by the end, Erlander had grown into someone I would spend more time with in a subsequent book.

As the International MysteryVBB has ended, I'm reserving this for judyslumo612's Medicine Chest Bookbox . Thanks for sharing!

I'm claiming this from the Medicine Chest bookbox. I haven't read anything by this author before, and the Iceland setting appealed to me.

Later: I found myself caught up in this story more than I thought I would at the beginning; the grumpy Erlendur was difficult to like (even though he clearly had a lot on his plate regarding his troubled daughter, among other things), and the victim was gradually shown to be the kind of person that the world's better off without. But of course there had to be an investigation, and the dogged Erlendur made his way through many painful revelations, opening old wounds and stirring things up. I enjoyed the many forensic bits and the nicely-gruesome corpse-discovery, but I had to admit that it was a very difficult question as to whether the world was a better place for the investigation or not. The people who seemed to have come out slightly better at the end then at the beginning were Erlendur himself and his daughter, and who knows how long that will last? [I gather I can find out if I delve into more books in the series {wry grin}.]

I see there was a 2006 film adaptation of this book; it's not available from Netflix yet, but I may get to see it some time.

Thanks for sharing this one!
