My daughter got this for Christmas from her Grandparents.

Charlotte Miller has always scoffed at talk of a curse on her family''s woolen mill, which holds her beloved small town together. But after her father''s death, the bad luck piles up: departing workers, impossible debts, an overbearing uncle. Then a stranger named Jack Spinner offers a tempting proposition: He can turn straw into gold thread, for the small price of her mother''s ring. As Charlotte is drawn deeper into her bargains with Spinner--and a romance with the local banker--she must unravel the truth about the curse on the mill and save the community she has always called home.
A twist on the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale.

My daughter thought this a good book.

Although this is classified as a young adult novel, it could easily stand on the adult shelves. It is well written and suspenseful, and is both a historical and a fantasy novel. The setting is as much a character as the people, while the magical elements are neatly woven in to the story without seeming unbelievable.

This book won the William C. Morris YA Debut Award, and was named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults (always a good recommendation) and a Smithsonian Notable Book.

My daughter will read this book next.

Thanks, Kally93, for sharing!

I do enjoy fairy tale books that tell the story from a different perspective, so I was looking forward to hearing from "the miller's daughter" in this tale of Rumplestiltskin. While I loved the magical elements and the beautiful setting, I could not warm to Charlotte's character. She was awesome in that she took charge of her father's business after his death, but her constant secret keeping from her husband ended up putting her in a scary situation. She redeemed herself in the end, but I was pretty angry with her for the last 3/4 of the book!
