Ooop! I forgot to journal and release this book with the special news! Duh!
Anyways, I picked up the abridged version of this book from herchelle:
The Thirty-Nine Steps
Immediately, I put my deductive powers to use and determined that it was a leveled reader for Dutch speaking people in the Netherlands to read when learning English. I also deduced that there was an actual full length novel available. Quite promptly I made my way to my secret source (Chapters, cough, cough) and picked up the full length item. This being it!
Truely a fun novel - the precurser to James Bond, and given that it was written in 1915 it doesn't feel overly dated.
Now for the serendipity!!!
I had no sooner finished reading this book when - gasp- in my inbox I received an e-mail from Stage West, and. lo and behold, The Thirty-Nine Steps (Broadways version of Alfred Hitchcock's rendition) will be playing in January of 2012!!!!! We all HAVE TO GO!!!
I will be booking us a table.
Now, for a final tidbit of trivia - John Buchan was also the Governer General of Canada in 1935 to 1940.
So cool to have grabbed that little reader form herchelle only to stumble upon so much great info and the prospect for so much fun with my Bookcrossing buddies!

A fast-paced believable story of a man mixed up in an affair of espionage, and how he rises to the challenge with intelligence and courage. I am curious to know how this story will translate to the stage...

I caught this book July 17 but immediately went out to the lake and forgot to journal it. I read the other version there and finished this one this morning - what an excellent novella!

Interesting to see all the twists and unusual actions the main character takes. I think I enjoyed this version more - the language kept it more interesting.

Going in, I thought it be a spy novel, like James Bond or something. Nothing like James Bond, but that doesn't mean it was a horrible book. It felt, I guess the word I'm looking for is laid-back. There are no explosions, or car chases, or big gun battles, but the story still manages to create suspense. It'll be neat to see this on the stage.

I am looking forward to reading the "real" 39 Steps. Thank you everyone for helping me to read the big girl copy. I will put this close to the top of the TBR pile...all those other books in line better not grump too loudly and keep me awake.

Part of a pair with an abridged ESL version, which I must read for March. Still if a former director of MI5 will write an introduction to it, its probably pretty good.

Loved it very much, although not as much as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I'm beginning to develop a terrible addiction to spy novels, someone may have to stage an intervention. This definitely didn't help.

Feed me more spy novels, I must have more!!!!

So I read the thin abridged version first because I didn't think I would have time to read the full book before we saw the stage west production. But I did! And I must say that the thin book was good enough for me. I am not a fan of words.... hmm that sounds bad... but I like to get to the facts and the thin book did it for me. I get sidetracked and go off into lala land sometimes and then miss out pertinant facts. But it was an intersting book and the language of "old" made it interesting, puzzling and darn right annoying all at the same time. Looking forward to seeing how they do this as a stage production.

After making it's way through the Calgary Bookcrossing group and attending the 39 Steps theater production at Stage West, this novel has come home to me. The stage version is not like the book - more of a parody - but highly entertaining with fun acting and jokes galore. I really enjoyed it!
After deliberation with the rest of the group, I have decided to offer this novel along with the reader of The 39 Steps and a lovely newspaper clipping reviewing the Stage West play out as a Book Ring.
Since this book is special to us here, I will be selective in who participates in this ring - we really would like it to come home to us :)
