Words like heartwarming, touching, beautiful, and wonderful hardly begin to describe this book. It is by far the best dog book I have ever read. It is told from the point of view of a dog who experiences several lives. I was sorry when I finished it.

This book deserves to travel! The order of the Bookring is as follows (new participants are welcome).

1. wibaut - Netherlands
2. creativechaos - Netherlands
3. rodespringal - Belgium
4. Nakipa - Portugal

7. PJLBewdy - Australia
8. madpocky - Philippines
9. lovesOU - USA -- Texas
10. cherryj - Canada
11. collectorkerri - USA -- Illinois

And back to me. Please feel free to write comments right in the book, along with your location and name if you'd like. Really, anything would be great; I think it will make a nice keepsake when the book returns home (-:

WARNING: contains spoiler !!

I must confess that the story did not catch me right away. The human characters in the story stayed a bit flat in my opinion. But I immediately fell in love with little Toby, and I loved him and the book more and more when he became Bailey, and Ellie, and Buddy.

I'm glad they (he and his 'boy') lived happily ever after (in some way). I only wish I'd knew if dogs and human beings share one heaven...if NOT I'd rather be in dog's heaven...;o))

Thanks to Marjo for telling me about this RING, and ofcourse you Jackie700 for sharing the book.

BTW: I'm really sorry but some pages have become a little wet. The book fell almost into a dog's water bowl (really...) while I wanted to read while my dog Elwood wanted me to play with him instead of reading...;o))

Will start reading after finishing another ringbook :)

Ps: I didn't noticed anything wet... so no worries.

It was a very good read... I found it splendid and now with this story in my mind, I have to say I wonder what my dogs are thinking :)
One thing that kept me going, 1 point of sarcasm - sorry :-) - I looks like the author is building up with amazing dogs and then Buddy comes along... after Ellie, the rescue-dog, what a purpose does a dog have to forfill, to go to heaven, I couldn't stop wondering why Buddy came at the end of this story... till I read the finally pages: he wanted to be himself again.

Will send this to Portugal to Nakipa... save journey!

On it's way to Australia. I did not have the chance to get to the very end of the book but I did get a few laughs out of it, one or two good cries and a new perspective on how my dog looks at me sometimes :D

This arrived today. Thank you Nakipa for posting it.
What cheap postage! I'm jealous. For me to post the same package to Portugal would cost more than three times what you paid.
I am reading another book at present ("Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After", which I'm enjoying and finding funny), but this book will be next after that and I look forward to reading it.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This was an enjoyable read; however I had trouble with the concept of dogs as eager servants. I see them more as friends who become part of our pack, not, as the dog was in this story, seeing its own purpose as to serve humans. Phillip Pullman used this idea too in his stories (Northern Lights, etc) when the souls of people who were servient were dogs, while those who were more independent (rebels, leaders) were more likely to be cats and other animals. The story was a little too syrupy for my tastes also; everyone found their love and lived happily ever after. But I did like when the dog found the boy again, the boy was now an old man, demonstrating the number of years that had passed. Why did the dog have such disregard for cats? We had a cat who grew up with the neighbours’ dog. They adored each other, they slept together, played together, were always in each others company, they would seek out the other.
I would have liked to see the dog reborn as more different breeds of dogs. The dogs s/he was reborn as were very similar breeds. For example, why not a Chihuahua? I don’t like the distortion, but it could have been fun. On that comment, I would have enjoyed more humour, such as in “Dog on It” by Spencer Quinn, another story from the dog’s perspective. That story was so funny and I gave that a ten.
I did like that the dog was reborn as both male and female. The story was a sad indictment against puppy farms.
A comment about the scene where the boy is riding the horse and they come upon a snake. From this scene (so overdone by Hollywood) it seems to me that the author is more familiar with the Hollywood version of horse comes upon snake than what usually happens in real life. Having on several occasions come across a snake while out riding, I can say that not once did my horse rear or even shy at the snake. It ignored it, even the one coming towards us, raised up striking, after another horse in front had trodden on it. If fact the person who ran the riding stable where I rode once commented that horses don’t see snakes as threats. And I have read that horses are likely to be bitten on the nose because they reach down to examine it. Hardly a sign of terror.
An enjoyable read and I can understand why others might score it higher than me. Perhaps it’s just because I don’t have a dog that I didn’t.

Thank you Jackie700 for starting the Bookring.

I am heading to the post office to send the book to PJLBewdy.

MMMM Well I do look like books about dogs but something about this one hit a discordant note with me. Not to say that Cameron is not a highly commercial and entertaining author; I think it was just that the plot construction and writing style were so obviously manipulating the reader - and based on very spurious premises. Still, there was no way I was going to stop reading the book and I did enjoy it.

Full disclosure: I am a cat person. While I did ultimately enjoy this book once I finished it, I had a hard time getting into it. Almost the entire section as Bailey reinforced for me that dogs are generally not very smart. However, the section as Ellie completely reversed that idea! I see that so much of a dog's behaviour is affected by how it is trained by humans.
Thought the end was a bit too happily ever after, as someone else mentioned, I don't think I would have wanted it to end any other way.

The concept of a book written from a dog's point of view can be done very badly, but W. Bruce Cameron did a nice job with this story. I liked the dog in all his/her incarnations and I'm glad (s)he found a purpose. The book now is on its way back to Jackie700 after its world travels.
