Girls of Riyadh

"Ja wo sa mer denn?"
Lies mindestens ein Buch, das diese Frage beantwortet, das also eine Ortsangabe im Titel trägt. Dabei ist es egal ob der Ort real existiert (z.B. Hawaii, Küche, New York...), eine Himmelsrichtung oder fiktiv (z.B. Himmel, Hölle, Nirvana...) ist.
About the book:
Gamrah’s faith in her new husband is not exactly returned …
Sadeem is a little too willing to please her fiancé …
Michelle is half-American and the wrong class for her boyfriend’s family …
While Lamees works hard with little time for love.
The girls of Riyadh are young, attractive and living by Saudi Arabia’s strict cultural traditions. Well, not quite. In-between sneaking out behind their parents’ backs, dating, shopping, watching American TV and having fun, they’re still trying to be good little Muslim girls. That is, pleasing their families and their men.
But can you be a twenty-first century girl and a Saudi girl?
My opinion:
Ok, I wish I had read this book before going to Egypt for 2x 6 month. Well Egypt is not exactly Saudi Arabia, but you learn a lot about how the male arabs mind is working. Now I finally know why they always pester you with their phone number... or as the first thing ask for yours.
The book as written as a series of emails, which I personally don't really like but nevertheless as a western reader you get a good glimps into the world of the privileged and rich girls. All of the girls belong to the so-called "velvet-class" which means insanely rich but not royal but still the liberties as a woman are very restricted. After reading the book I'm very happy that I'm not a Saudi Arabian girl - what is the use of a lot of money, if you cannot go out on your own, cannot choose who you want, or even drink coffee with whom you like.

When I started reading I did not like the email-style of this book but it became familiar during the read and suits the story. Without knowing much about Arab life, religion and rules I cannot opine objectively, but I think this book might give a valuable insight view of women's life in one of the most strictly ruled Arab countries - definitely worth reading!

Thank you Trik!!! I'm very much looking foward to reading this book as I have to admit I don't know a lot about Saudi Arabia or their culture.
Finished it in the train before passing it over to my mother.
