Amazon Editorial Review
Alleyn's friend, Nigel, stood near the centre of the stage. He had moved forward towards the wings, when a voice warned him to look out. An instant later, Inspector Alleyn hurled himself at Nigel, driving him backwards and out of the way of a falling object.

This was better than I expected. The language was at times a bit difficult for me, maybe it's written in a bit older style? But that made it more interesting. And I loved how I kept changing my mind on the bad guy. The author kept me guessing until the end. Not the most exciting book but certainly enjoyable.
Off to the Netherlands now (after Christmas, as I do not want to brave the line at the post office right now).

Writing a review for this book is quite easy on the one hand: just write down that I liked the book. On the other hand that would make me feel like I didn't do the book justice, so I'll have to elaborate a bit more.
I liked the book: it is a bit like these English detective series I like to watch: A Touch of Frost, Inspector Dalgliesh, you know the kind. In general very polite, very correct, with very little violence whenever possible. That's what I expected of this book and that's what I got.
What I didn't like was, that the book was in quite old fashioned English. The original dated form 1935 or so, so that shouldn't be a surprise, but still that made it quite hard to read at times. (It was the 2nd time in one week that I encountered the word 'scolded' in a book. Since I didn't know the word, I looked it up and added one more word to my English vocabulary...).
Summing it all up: I'm glad I came across this little book, I liked reading it.

I didnt really enjoy this book. I didnt like any of the characters and I had to keep going back and re-reading parts of the dialogue as I couldnt understand who said what. Maybe it was because it was written so long ago (1935) and the language was different from that in a modern mystery, but I dont think I will read anything else by this author.

I'm sorry to say I didn't enjoy this. I felt it was written like a badly acted play. I did try to give the author the benefit of the doubt as it was set in a theatre but the dialogue just felt so stilted. The language was very dated and although I know it was written in the thirties, I don't get this feeling with other authors of the period. I agree with 3vie that I found myself constantly going back and re-reading because I hadn't understood the paragraph. I also did not like the phonetic spelling - I mean for goodness sake "eggzit"! I don't know if this was meant to be Inspector Alleyn's own voice or if he was putting it on. I got the impression he was acting the fool what with all the theatrical quotes and this behaviour did not endear him to me. I do actually have two books by this author on Mount TBR so she might get a second chance.

posting on today :)
Not sure if I am 1 week behind or 3 weeks in front with this book but apologies either way.
This is a very quick book to read as it is less than 200 pages. Little too tame for my liking however it was nice to be introduced to this author and I did find it very entertaining.
ETA - not being posted now until 1.8.12

As promised I read this little book quickly so that it can travel on soon.
Well, I have to agree with some of the others that the language obviously is kind of old-fashioned but nevertheless I could read this book more or less quickly.
I liked the story and the mystery solving by the Chief Detective-Inspector - until the very end I was not totally sure who was the murderer!

More of the same: theatrical murder told largely from the point of view of Nigel Bathgate. Trollerific prologue notwithstanding, I didn't guess the murderer, though wasn't particularly surprised by the revelation. I was rather intrigued by the tension between Inspector Alleyn and Stephanie Vaughan; I don't think I've seen him particularly interested by anyone other than Troy. I think I may need to give Marsh a rest for a few years; they do seem to be increasingly same-y.
