Puchased at fair's fair for the Canada Day Release Challenge. I like to read Japanese-Canadian authors.

To the finder:
Welcome to bookcrossing! You have "caught" what we call a "travelling book." It is now your book to keep or to read and pass on to another reader and follow where the book goes. This is done by journal entries, so I really hope you'll journal it, if only to tell me you found it. You can do this anonymously, or sign up (free and private, no spam) and also be able to follow the book as it travels! If you do, please consider listing me, megami-no-ushi as your referring member.

I really enjoyed this book and the imaginative premise for the exploration of the narrator's family history. Also really interesting to me was the way this book drove home for me the differences between Japanese and Okinawan culture, language and history. I'd had an academic idea of it after a discussion of the politics of refering to Okinawan as a language (Okinawa-go) or a dialect (Okinawa-ben) but I'm inspired to do more research into pre-colonization Ryuukan kingdom. I also thought the exploration of Okinawa during WWII was well done.

I also really enjoyed the discussions of how the family adapted to life in Rainmaker Hills in southern Alberta. I thought the drawing of parallels between earth-sense on an island and earth-sense on the praries was worth further consideration.

I'm delighted to have won the Canadian Literature Sweepstakes! This is one of two books given to me by megami-no-ushi. How generous!

I will enjoy reading this book, after the thoughtful review by megami-no-ushi and then bring it to cirulate withing the Calgary BookCrossing circle.

Oh, lucky me!
