A Trail of Broken Dreams : The Gold Rush Diary of Harriet Palmer
11 journalers for this copy...
These little Dear Canada books are great even for adults. I always learn something new about canadian history every time I read one.
Book description(from Chapters.ca)
Still reeling from the death of her mother, Harriet sets out on a dangerous journey -- disguised as a boy, since no "petticoats" are allowed on the trip -- determined to find her missing father in the gold fields of British Columbia''s Cariboo. The journey itself is incredibly difficult, and Harriet still has to find her father before the winter snows close down the entire Williams Creek area. Will she be able to find him, or will her journey be for nothing

This book will go to the June meeting where it will either go home with a reader to read prior to the July Canada Day Release Challenge or it will come back home with me.

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing November meet-up. I loved the Little House on the Prairie books and this one kind of reminded me of those. Also, looks like a quick read.

Interesting little story about the gold rush in Canada. I expected some straightforward story about a girl travelling with her family, but she got to pretend she was a boy and that was different. It's cool that the author also worked in real people. Hopefully kids read this without thinking they're being forced to learn about history.

I love this series of Canadian YA books. They make learning Canadian history so accessible.
It is also great to have strong female characters for this audience and Harriet is brave, feisty and not to be stopped from her mission to find her father. A great story.

Found the book at the Museum of Central Finland, Jyväskylä. Picked it up because at the quick look I thought it was a reprint of a real diary from 19th century. It was kind of a disappointment to find out it really was a youth fiction. I decided to read it anyway and it wasn't too bad. Actually I enjoyed reading it until the page 120. After that the author hurried the plot unnecessarily too fast to the conclusion.
Will release it at the Riihimäki railway station, Finland.

Found it from the Riihimäki Railway Station when leaving home from work. I had only time to start it, seems like a very interesting story about a strange time in history. Also, i like the point of view, as there are not too many books written by woman from that period. I will leave it to the Paris Airport.
