Can't believe I have had this on Mt TBR for seven years! Finally read it.

It was OK but modern science has rendered it pretty unbelievable. And also, really, not that much happens. There's a lot of walking down tunnels!

Verne obviously knew something about Iceland (Icelandic yoghurt even gets a mention, although misspelled "skye" in my copy), but he doesn't pick up on the one thing most other Europeans find remarkable - the Icelanders' lack of a surname. Only one character is called Fridriksson. The others are called things like Count Trampe. It's as if his research was done by asking specific questions of someone who had just been there. I suppose when it was published, his readers would have been so unfamiliar with Iceland he could have made up whatever he liked.

Also the idea of a forest of giant mushrooms terrifies me. Don't know why.
