This work of P.D. James is often compared to Agatha Christie's "And then there were None" - the distelled essence of a whodunit. I could not get to read it, and am passing it on.

Journal Entry 6 by freezone at Cambridge, Massachusetts USA on Tuesday, January 17, 2012

8 out of 10

Like all P.D. James' books, this was a propulsive read and involving, as you try to figure out what happened and who the criminal is. The personal issues for the detectives felt a little pro forma, and didn't tell us as much about them as people than I would have liked. Still, it was a terrific detective novel.

Good point, Bhuri - this is unusual for P.D. James, in that it takes place in a closed system, with the complexities of a diverse group, and we break into their privacy only briefly. Each book by James seems to meditate on privacy and how crime destroys it. (Like writing, as explicitly addressed in this story.)
