Hamakua Hero: A True Plantation Story
5 journalers for this copy...
Picked this up at the Hawaii Book and Music Festival.
Based on the true story of Katsu Goto, a young man who arrived in Hawaii with the first shipload of immigrants from Japan in 1885.
I do wish the print quality was better. :s
The photo shows Katsu Goto's pocket watch; from an exhibit at the Bishop Museum. (Larger photo here.)
Here's another copy on my BookCrossing shelf.

This book is hitching a ride to the East Coast with another book. I thought it would go well with its traveling companion.

This book arrived safely in today's mail, along with The Four Immigrants Manga; thanks so much! This one looks interesting - and entertaining as well; I was tickled to see that the inside front cover has a list of items to look for within the artwork inside, along the lines of the Can You See What I See books.
Later: Interesting story, but with such a tragic twist! I wasn't expecting that... Lots of great detail about the lives of the immigrants and the Hawaiian society at the time.

I'm adding this book to k00kaburra's re-started Manga/Graphic Novel bookbox, which will be on its way soon to BCer quietorchid in Minnesota. Hope someone enjoys this book!
*** Released for the 2012 Wine + Food + BookCrossing challenge, for the word "hero". ***

Took this book out of the bookbox. It sounds interesting, but a quick flip through shows that the text, and some of the images, are very pixilated. I'm assuming whatever files the publisher sent to the printer weren't quite high enough resolution for the size. It's not illegible by any means, but it might turn out to be a bit distracting. Nonetheless, I'll give it a go.
I finally got around to reading this! It got buried under a stack of newer books and it is such a slim book I forgot it was there until I was doing some re-organizing.
It is an interesting view into the life these immigrants who were pseudo-slaves on these plantations and the young man who realized that the workers didn't have to stand for this kind of treatment. Unlike GoryDetails, I saw tragedy coming. Historically, those who stick their neck out for the mistreated often don't come out unscathed.
I liked the light, stylized artwork, although the grainy quality of the print job was sadly detracting.

This book will be one of the starting books in the Small/Independent Press Bookbox
This book came back to me in the bookbox, so I'm sending it to BCer azuki in Florida to fill a wish. Enjoy!
Thanks again Gory, for thinking of me, as always.
I read Alan Brennert's Honolulu not too long ago, so I'm interested in this to understand better the Asian immigrants history in Hawaii. Really happy I get to read this.
Thanks again to all who passed this along.

The certainly is not what I expected. I thought it would be something like a rag to riches story... though I have to say I am glad to learn about this little-known hero in Hawaii's history, as well as learning more about the lives of early immigrants.
The amateurish artwork does distract a bit from the story. I presume it's a book commissioned by the museum/foundation, and was surprised that this was originally published in Japan, where honestly even the arts in doujinshi's are often more skilled than our commercial publications here.
