My boss gave me this book to release (a bag full!), but I want to read it before setting it free.

From the back: "The two remarkable novellas that comprise Paul Theroux's latest bestseller explore the mystery and menace of double lives. From the seamy netherworlds of London to the suburbs of Boston, Theroux weaves a chilling drama around sex, power, and the sinister allure of the forbidden."

6 out of 10

Funny thing is, I didn't care much for the first novella, about a young American woman in London who leads a double life, working as a researcher on Arabic matters in the daytime and as a expensive call girl at night, often encountering the same Arabic business men her studies are about. She then discovers that leading this double life can be very dangerous.
The second novella was more engrossing (I really can't explain why, but I just really wanted to know how it ended). It tells the story of a twin, two boys who used to be forced to wear the same clothes and sing and dance together and lost contact with each other after a certain age. Years after, one of the brothers (George) comes to see the other (Gerald) and when George dies onder suspicious circumstances, Gerald wants to find out who his brother was and what he did. Because they look very much alike, he takes over his brothers life and discovers what happened... (remember, the novellas are about the dangers of living double lives!).

I'm not sure where I'll leave the book, maybe in New York, where I'll go next month.

I caught this book today on the little table in the Log-On Cafe. It was easy to find and looks like an interesting read. I've been a reader of Theroux for some time now ever since I read "The Mosquito Coast." (Harrison Ford was great in that movie; he should try taking risks like that more often.)
