One of my favourite books ever! Tita and her true love Pedro are forbidden to marry, so Pedro enters into a marriage with Tita's sister, Rosaura, in order to remain close to Tita. While the couple wait for the fates to eventually conspire in their favour, Tita pours her heart and soul into the food she cooks (a different recipe begins each chapter), so that those who eat her food experience despair or love or lust as strongly as Tita herself. Truly unique!

I actually finished reading this a couple of weeks ago, but then life did that annoying thing it does and got in the way of my journalling. There are few things in life I like more than food and books and suggestions of magic, and when all three come together I'm a happy bunny! I don't know if it was just my personal experiences at the time colouring my perception of Tita and Pedro's love, but even though they were truly in love, I felt stifled on her behalf by his passion - and the only place she was truly free was in her kitchen, and in her relationship with the good doctor. You can't choose who you love, I suppose. Will be posting this to Suzy26 this afternoon. Thanks to Tangledthreads for the spiral!

Remarkable novel. The novel consists of 12 chapters, one for each month. I fail to understand the meaning of this. The story covers a much larger period of time than just 12 months and the particular month after which a chapter is named has nothing to do with its contents. Is it just because this is supposed to be A Novel in Monthly Instalments with Recipes, Romances and Home Remedies? Other than that, it is a great story, rich in South-American atmosphere, full of magical realism and the pages are filled with the adventures of strong-willed female characters. I love the way in which Laura Esquivel mixed the recipes and the cooking into her reflections on love and life and how she used them as metaphors. I am not so sure if I would have fallen for Pedro the way Tita did, though. So, this is the end of tangledthreads' book spiral. Thank you for sharing these books with us, tangledthreads! I have greatly enjoyed reading them all. If it weren't for you and BC I would probably never have read them. If you ever want to start another book spiral, you know where to find me!

This was my favorite book in the spiral! I enjoyed how the author intertwined the recipes with the story itself. Tita's emotion truly did spill over into whatever food she was preparing. It was a love story mixed with a little bit of magic. Very well done! Thanks for sharing this, tangledthreads! It's on its way back to you.
