I bought this book because lils74 from Nepal has it on her wishlist, and I had a little game on the forum about buying something from someone´s wishlist - the book looked interesting and none of my books have ever been to Nepal, so lils74 was one of the winners.
The book has now been with me to the southern part of Austria (Carinthia) for easter and tomorrow is going with me to Salzburg for a course, so it´s already traveling a bit (and I bought it used in the internet and it came from GB)...
This was a really great book. Of course, a few pages less and it could be perfect, but still: great. I especially liked her writing from the child´s view: that´s what it felt to be a child! And how the story unfolds from perfect 1950s-idyllic family life to the realities of far less perfect and far less idyllic cold war in the big to the even less idyllic community life.... great! I sure will keep my eyes open looking for other books by this author. One of the best books I have read in the last years.

I posted the book in a small post office in Salzburg (because I was there for a course), and the lady at the counter was really enthusiastic about sending something to Kathmandu! (And so am I. - Hope you like it!)

What a surprise! I found a slip in my post box and when I went to the counter for large items I found a large parcel from Austria! For a minute I was totally confused, as I'd forgotten about this wonderful offer of yours, Schwester. Thank you so much! And it's such a large book, how generous of you to send it so far. From what you wrote it sounds like a good book too, so I am looking forward to reading it. Thank you again!

While I have just started this book, I am enjoying it so much I have to write a note to say so! It is beautifully written, like poetry, like an epic.
The only reason I will likely take a long time to read it is that it is HUGE and most of my reading time is while I am out and about, and as it's too large to carry around, it'll have to be for home reading.
But it's beautiful, so far.

It's taken me a long time to admit this, as I hate to give up on a book that another Bookcrosser has been so wonderful as to send me, but I am just not going to be able to finish this. It's not just the length, but also the rather disturbing subject matter, even though very well written, which has just been very difficult for me. I will try to find another reader to enjoy it, though. Thank you again for sending it to me, Schwester!
