Two books in one:

Blue Horizon is a sequel to Monsoon: Tom & Dorian Courtney are now rich and established traders based in Capetown. When Tom's son Jim liberates a pretty female convict (who - of course - was unfairly deported), the whole family has to flee the Colony, with unofficial hunters on their trail.
Separately, Dorian's former life as the adopted son of the sultan of Oman plays up, after he heard that his (hated) half-brother has been ousted and people are looking for him to take control of the rebel faction. With the former sultan regained power, the Courtneys are up for a fight on two fronts. In what I already recognise as Wilbur Smith's style, this causes plenty of adventure, but little real trouble.

Hungry as the sea is set in the 1970s, although it could just as easily be today. Nick Berg is a former shipping magnate, having lost both his company and his wife to the same rival. Left with only a salvage company (itself riddled with debt), he gets a lucky break when a Antarctic cruise ship flounders and needs rescuing.
Meanwhile, his former company finalises the development of the world's first supertanker; but unlike Nick's original plans, the design is more economical than safe. When the maiden voyage of this tanker includes a million tons of highly toxic crude oil, Nick is the only one who can stop a disaster happening - not least since he's the only one that thinks it threatens.

As with Monsoon, these are two very easily readable books. They both require a hefty suspension of disbelief and there are moment when Smith really makes no sense (e.g. when describing the marine biologists that don't know how to tag a fish). But they're enjoyable enough that I stick with my original verdict of Wilbur Smith: not worth seeking out, but something I will pick up if I spot it. As the previous one, I'll send this book out into the world soon.

Just snatched this from the (miseable) Postie's hand! I've almost finished Monsoon. So I will eagerly start this one, soon as I get through that and the other bookray I have already (next week all being well). Thanks for starting this 'Ray RonOren! (no offence taken by post delay either :) ).

***Blue Horizon***
This book has so many sub-plots that link up, but I still enjoyed it. Wilbur Smith does transport me back in time. It does irratate me that he is a bit inconsistant with his charachters. I noticed that in Monsoon when Hal suddenly became much younger when he fathered Black Billy. And in Monsoon, I'm sure Tom & Guy were fluent in Arabic. Having lived all the years between Monsoon & Blue Horizon interacting with Arab-speakers they suddenly have no clue. Maybe I'm just an ungratful nit picker (who can't spell). These books cover so much time and adventures perhaps Mr Smith just confuses himself. Still I would read more by him. Lucky that as Hungry as the Sea is attached to this. So on to the next one...

***Hungry As The Sea***
When I started this book and realised it was about a tug boat, my first thought was Boring! It took me a long time to read because I had no time to read. So I did loose the thread a little, but it was ok. Wilbur Smith is quite clever at getting his charachters into a right pickle and safely out again. This book is getting parceled up to post onto DisneyFreakSam to finish off the Ray tomorrow.
