Cover Art is different.

I have always wanted to give this book a go, so was pumped to find a copy in the second hand store on Rue du Midi.

Quote from the back: "A novel of metamorphosis, hauntings, memories, hallucinations, revelations, advertising jingles and jokes. Rushdie has the power of description, and we succumb."

You know, i liked this book. It was a tough slog through some parts, but in the end, the writing was superb, the characters engaging, the pacing good. While I obviously don't agree with the way he has been treated and persecuted, Rushdie definitely does push the envelope.... But like most things in life, the most exciting pieces of art tread the line between the sacred and the profane.

Some of the images and characters will stay with me for a long time. Surprisingly maybe, it was the women more than Gibreel (Archangel Gabriel) and Saladin (Satan) that caught my imagination. Not to say that the male characters and plot lines were without their literary charms--- one doesn't easily forget that opening fall from an airplane or the transformation from man to minitaur (spelling?)... The death of father of Saladin at the end was also quite memorable in its own way.

But I loved the storyline of Ayesha the butterfly eater and modern day prophet, ready to lead her people through the sea to the promised land/mecca; and the images of the Ice Queen scaling mountains and haunted by the ghosts of failed climbers; and the ghost of Rekha floating on her carpet, tormenting Gibreel with her love and pain.

This book had so many layers, so many themes, and yet everything kinda fit together in the end. It is a real achievement to have done this so well, with so much to blend--- I really liked it. A true epic, along the lines of "One thousand years of solitude", in my opinion.

Anyway, really enjoyed this book for the most part (again, some parts dragged for me... hence the 8 rating--- but that is just my opinion). Will release this book soon!
