Thank you, this wishlist book has arrived safely in Salt Lake! My trip to the high Uintas fell short of being great only by the ferociousness and persistence of myriads of monster mosquitoes.
Nothing deterred them, and they bit right through denim! But the birds, the trees, the deer, the soughing breeze, the lakes, the stars....ah, sheer heaven....

It's taken me wayyyyyyy too long to get around to reading this (I'm afraid it disappeared, under the masses), but I finally have, and it's FABULOUS! Hard to believe this is a first novel. What , do I like so much? Well, of course the story, and the horses. Those are givens. I remember having a 16 year-old, what my daughter was like, and the push and pull between us. Very real and well done. I liked Annamarie. Our issues were different, but I could identify with them, with her, and the inability to resolve. And I liked Dan, the Vet, (even tho I'm like "oh, no, don't degenerate into a Romance!). And being involved with Rescues, I could identify with that as well.
I shall look for another horse-obsessed person to send this on to. Thank you once again, for sending this to me!!!

Well, it's not (directly at least) to another horse-obsessed person, but I am putting it into my Wild Thing Bookbox, where I'm sure it will be pulled, read, and loved by another animal lover, at least :)
Thanks again for sharing this wonderful book with me!!

Taken from the Wild Thing Bookbox. Looks interesting.
Okay, I was a little disappointed. Gruen's Water for Elephants was so elegant, engrossing and surprising that I expected more. Good story, but I could clearly tell it was a first novel. I kept harping back to 'how to write a novel' books that say anytime you are stuck, do something even WORSE to your character. The Horse sections were evocative, but Annemarie never learns anything or grows much. She is just reeling from crisis to crisis (mostly self-generated also, so she isn't learning on that front!). Still, it was a nice read, and I now want to see a brindled horse....

Wonderful story, very good! Brought it home from college, so it also traveled to my hometown of Stacy, MN :)
Oh my gosh quietorchid, that's where I got the book! I found it in Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, MN on top of a trash can after seeing a dog show early in January! I am the one who brought it home from college to Stacy, MN (see above comment).
