I recently picked this up off the shelf wanting a light, easily digested read. I have read the book previously and of course seen the film - and I've taught as an ESL reader for international students, so the I know the story line well.
What resonated with me on this reading was the insight, acceptance and compassion for mental illness - and how it can affect any of us at any time and to varying degrees. I have since learnt that Nick Hornby has a severley autistic son who was possibly born well after this book was written, since it's set in 1993. This empathy and compassion would be an invaluable resource for the author in real life challenges I imagine.
Still very enjoyable!
