This somewhat-battered '43 hardcover is from the collection of my friend Marty. I'm sending it traveling in her memory.

The contents are interesting - a long narrative poem about the colonization of America, focusing on quite a few individuals and following their histories. (I learned from the introduction that it was meant to continue, to describe the westward expansion, but this volume focuses on the early colonies, including Jamestown and Plymouth.) Some of the characters caught my interest more than others - young Dickon Heron, for example, a restless youth who's discontented with his apprenticeship in London. The story follows him and others as they decide to cross the ocean, face the hardships of the new world, find love and/or lose it, move on, succeed or fail, struggle or succumb - and sometimes face tragic fates after surmounting incredible difficulties. (Some of the characters are clearly historical figures; others I'm not sure about, but their experiences certainly match those that the actual colonists had to undergo.)

I enjoyed the book, with its blend of history, poetic imagery, and (to be frank) a somewhat soap-opera element of the tangled family relationships; it puts a personal touch to historical events.
