Members of BCinDC picked this up at The Book Thing of Baltimore, Inc.
I didn't get to visit The Book Thing as I went to the zoo, but I got a Book Thing book anyway. How nice!!
Read this during the Dewey 24 hr Read-a-thon.
This is a short biography about Sarah Forbes Bonetta. The author did a good research, and the facts are presented with little poetic license. As a small girl in Africa, her village was destroyed by enemy, most of the villagers killed but she was kept alive as a future ritual sacrifice due to her high birth. She was rescued by a British captain and brought to England, where she became a protegee of Queen Victoria herself. (Sarah's daughter would have the Queen as godmother.)
Sarah's story is most remarkable indeed, especially considering how African girls in America were faring: as slaves in plantations. In England she was enjoying high tea with Queen Victoria and receiving a good education, without appearing to be discriminated.

Picked this up from our meetup table tonight. Looks like a good and quick read. Thanks, Azuki.
Such an interesting story, a page out of history that I knew nothing about. I did also google to see if I could find anything more to add to what Myers writes in this book. It seems amazing to me that the letters exited and that he found them. I actually found the introduction of this book, in which Myers tells of how he came to find these letters, to be as fascinating as the story of Sarah, itself.
This book was written for younger readers, I think, and as such, was a quick read. I'd love to read a more fleshed-out version though I don't know if one exists.
An enjoyable read and I will leave this in one of our local LFLs.
