Read this while in Honolulu + on plane heading home. I am not sure what I had expected re: the author Marina Lewycka but this did take me somewhat by surprise.
Reading the cover it said - "Hilarious" (Guardian) / "A funny, charming, rollicking road trip" (Observer).... All the reviews were in the same vein so it was a little disappointing when the humour just didn't seem to pan out for me....
I enjoyed the book but more for the picture it painted of the dreadful treatment metered out to legal & illegal immigrants wandering around Europe (especially the UK) looking for a better life...
For me the most graphic picture painted was of the mass producing chicken farms that exist purely to provide cheap, plump chicken breast for the supermarkets... yes, I knew of these practises already but reading this almost made me become a vegetarian !!!..
All told an interesting, quick read....
